and the winter wind kept tally of the stories in the snow...where the northern lights bent low to hear the murmured undertow...for the towns were counting pennies and the cities counting years...and the prairies stitched their futures through the quiet of their fears...from the towers by the lakeshore to the hamlets on the plain...rose the hum of weary labour like a half remembered strain...while the wires sang of reckonings no hearth could quite ignore...and the land...in solemn patience...held its breath for one verse more...in a harbour town of cedar where the tide keeps gentle time...they lit lanterns for a neighbour who’d grown frail before her prime...and the children sang her stories as the snow fell soft and slow...while the elders brewed remembrance in the warmth of candle glow...for the sea had been her lifeline and the storms her measured test...and the village held her memory like a heartbeat in its chest...so the night became a vigil where the wind refused to roam...and the salt spray of her lifetime found its way back home...on the prairie’s frozen shoulder where the wheat ghosts rise and lean...a mechanic closed his workshop just to fix the old canteen...for the rink had lost its heating and the teams were due at dawn...and the town could not imagine winter’s rites with warmth withdrawn...so he soldered through the midnight with his breath a silver thread...till the pipes began their humming like a hymn for those long dead...and the skates carved morning’s promise on the ice he helped restore...while the boards rang out with laughter like they had in years before...up the northern logging highway where the spruce stand dark and tall...came a convoy bearing groceries for the elders in the hall...for the thaw had split the roadway and the trucks could not get through...till the trappers cleared a detour where the fox and raven flew...and the village met the drivers with a feast of bannock bread...sharing stories of the winter and the dreams their hunters led...while the fire cracked its blessing on the circle gathered near...and the north...in quiet wonder...held them close and drew them near...
